July 12

Kakadu 2, Ubirr and Gunlom

On July 10 we reluctantly left Arnhem Land and recrossed the East Alligator River.

Ubirr is a rocky outcrop with views of the surrounding wetlands and escarpments.  From there we watched a spectacular, but crowded sunset (it is school holiday and peak tourist time for Kakadu in July).   We camped in the nearby Merle camp ground.  It was memorable in that both the Lonely Planet and the ranger warned us about the mosquitoes… they weren’t wrong.l

Vista from Ubirr, stunning.

We then moved on to the southern end of Kakadu to Gunlom for two very relaxing days swimming the rock pools on the escarpment.  The kids all ran themselves into the ground, and we had a bit of time to reorganise. Nice camp site with wild Brumbies coming and going.
