Holly’s highlights #1

Coober Pedy

When we got to Coober Pedy we drove to our hotel and we stayed in an underground hotel and you could go on top of all the rooms and it was really nice to watch the sunset.

Uluru and the Olgas

We walked around the base of Uluru which was 10km long and we got to see the Aboriginal women’s and men’s places but for lots of them you can’t take photos because they are sacred to the aboriginal people.

We watched the sunset over Uluru and watched the rock change colour from brown to orange to red and then purple.

At the Olgas we went to the lookout and they looked like an Egyptian woman lying on a bed!! We did the Valley of the Winds walk and climbed a really steep path up to the top of one of the rocks.

Kings Canyon

Walked around the canyon rim and saw signs that said β€œcliff safety” because it was a deep canyon made by water causing the rocks to fall down from the top to the bottom. We then walked through the river bed to see and climb on the rocks.

West Macdonnell ranges

We stayed in a campsite at Glen Helen and we were supposed to be in number 19 but couldn’t fit so we had to move to number 10 which was bigger. We did our last big walk around Ormiston Gorge which took 4 hours and we saw an artist painting when we were on top of the lookout and he was painting the Gorge. We walked back through the river bed and there were so many rocks but there was no water as it was dry. We had walked 40km in 5 days around the centre of Australia!!

Daly Waters

We listened to country and western music at the pub and got to have a swim in the pool. We saw some firecrackers as it was Territory Day in the Northern Territory and Alex and dad went for a ride in a road train while it was turning around.

Darwin

We stayed at our friends Paul, Emma, Tessa, Gabe and Luka’s house in Darwin and it was hot and we went to Crocosaurus and had a tour and saw William the crocodiles mouth smash the ice block in a glass cage to see how strong his bite was. Then we got to go swimming with the baby crocodiles!!

Arnhem Land

We went on a tour with our guide James to the Billabong and we saw lots of wildlife and Aboriginal art. The art has been there for years and years some of it as long as 50,000 years. The men paint the paintings and the women and children do handprints.

Rainbow Serpent… he ate noisy children!

We saw crocodiles, Jabiru, Great Egrets, White-bellied Sea-eagles, Comb-crested Jacana (also known as the Jesus Bird), Brolgas, Pied Heron, Darters, Water Monitors and lots of water lilies.
