Broome Again
September 14-21
We have just spent a very slothful and indulgent week staying in Broome in a classical Pearling Masters residence with a modern restoration. It was weird staying in a house with lots of rooms, swimming pool and a dishwasher and washing machine. I think it was a little bizarre because we could all chill out and not have to mange everything, like food, clothes, and packing. We all got too much screen time, had too many ice creams and spent too much time lounging around the pool.
Despite all this we were not completely idle. There were real shops to spend hours and money in and we all got treated! Pearls for the girls, fishing gear for the boys. Even the trailer got all its repairs up to date, and both it and the car are almost clean. Everything is repacked and reorganised… Sarah feels that I should visit OCD anonymous after the range of boxes and bags that I have explored to make it all perfect.
We squeezed in some proper tourist activities. Camel rides on cable beach, visits to the Japanese cemetery and Broome museum, a pier walk and oysters at the Wharf cafe.
Cable beach is named for the site of the first undersea cable linking Singapore (and hence London) to Australia in 1889. All our plans for beach time and water activities got highjacked by the Irukandji jellyfish appearing a little earlier than usual closing the beach (wikipedia.org/wiki/Irukandji_jellyfish). The prospect of a 2 x 2 cm jellyfish sting causing incapacitating pain and cardiomyopathy makes the water less inviting!
We also have had an unexpected reunion with the Goldrick's. Their car woes continue… this time no air conditioning, necessitating a trip back to Broome for emergency repairs.
Fortunately it is a quick job and they are going to join us for the next leg of the trip into the Pilbara and 80 mile beach and Karinjini.
